Is He Able?

“The Ephraimites, armed to the teeth, ran off when the battle began. They were cowards to God’s Covenant, refused to walk by his Word. They forgot what he had done— marvels he’d done right before their eyes. He performed miracles in plain sight of their parents in Egypt, out on the fields of Zoan. He split the Sea and they walked right through it; he piled the waters to the right and the left. He led them by day with a cloud, led them all the night long with a fiery torch. He split rocks in the wilderness, gave them all they could drink from underground springs; He made creeks flow out from sheer rock, and water pour out like a river.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭78:9-16‬ ‭MSG‬‬

After the ten plaques of Egypt pharaoh finally allowed the Hebrews to leave. God had spared the Hebrews from the suffering that the plaques had caused the Egyptians. In Exodus 14 we see the Israelites crossing the desert when they see that pharaoh had changed his mind. As they approached the Red Sea they began to doubt and fear that doom was coming. They could see the clouds of dust from the horses getting closer. Why would God bring them to the desert just to slaughter them? They doubted big time and this wouldn’t be the last time they would doubt God. It makes one wonder how they could doubt after all the miracles they saw. The parting of the Red Sea was just the beginning. Psalm 78: 9-16 reveals the things the Hebrews had seen and yet they still had doubts about God. How could that be? They simply forgot.

I‘m so glad that we do not forget all the wonderful things God has done for us. I’m glad when new trials come we never doubt the power of God to get us through one more time. Or do we? I think it’s more accurate to say we are just like the Israelites. We forget. We doubt. How is that possible? Well, we get caught up in circumstances, we lose sight of Christ, we think this time it’s too big or too hard, the list goes on and on. We all do it. We are all human. It’s a struggle when we are weak and beaten down to remember what God has brought us through already. If he can part the sea, raise the dead, heal the sick he can certainly handle our situation. Let us pray that we will be reminded in times of doubt how God has moved just for us in the past so we will be confident that He will move for us in the present.
